How to fix "This site can't provide a secure connection"

ERROR DETECTED >This site can't provide a secure connection

UPDATED NOVEMBER 20262 MIN READ8 FIXES

QUICK FIX

Set your device's date and time automatically, clear cached files and reload. If other secure sites work and this one fails on every device, the site's security setup is broken and only its owner can fix it.

What it means

Chrome tried to make a secure HTTPS connection to the site but could not complete it, so it stopped. It is usually shown with a code such as ERR_SSL_PROTOCOL_ERROR or ERR_SSL_VERSION_OR_CIPHER_MISMATCH. The cause can be your device, your network or the website.

Common causes

  • Wrong date or time on your device
  • Stale cached data or cookies
  • An extension, antivirus or firewall intercepting secure traffic
  • A filtering or captive Wi-Fi network
  • The site uses outdated or misconfigured security settings
  • Opening a site with https:// that only supports http://

How to fix it

Work down the list. Each fix is safe to try before moving on to the next.

FIX 01Check the code and test other sitesEASY

  1. Read the code under the message, such as ERR_SSL_PROTOCOL_ERROR or ERR_SSL_VERSION_OR_CIPHER_MISMATCH.
  2. Open a few other secure sites.
  3. If only this one fails, try it on another device. If it fails everywhere, the site is the cause.

Why it helps: Tells you whether you can fix it or need the site owner.

FIX 02Set the date and time automaticallyEASY

  1. Windows 11: Settings > Time & language > Date & time, turn on Set time automatically, then select Sync now.
  2. Mac: Apple menu > System Settings > General > Date & Time, turn on Set time and date automatically.
  3. iPhone: Settings > General > Date & Time, turn on Set Automatically.

Why it helps: A wrong clock breaks certificate checks.

FIX 03Clear cache and cookiesEASY

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Delete (Windows) or Cmd + Shift + Delete (Mac).
  2. Choose All time, tick Cookies and other site data and Cached images and files, and delete.
  3. Reload the site.

Why it helps: Removes stale data that can break secure connections.

FIX 04Test in Incognito and turn off extensionsEASY

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + N (Windows) or Cmd + Shift + N (Mac) and open the site.
  2. If it works, go to chrome://extensions (or edge://extensions) and switch extensions off one at a time to find the cause.

Why it helps: Some extensions interfere with HTTPS.

FIX 05Update the browser and operating systemEASY

  1. Chrome: More (three dots) > Help > About Google Chrome, then Relaunch.
  2. Windows 11: Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates.
  3. Mac: Apple menu > System Settings > General > Software Update.

Why it helps: Keeps security protocols and trusted certificates current.

FIX 06Try another network or turn off VPNEASY

  1. Disconnect any VPN.
  2. Switch to a different network, such as your phone's hotspot.
  3. If the site works there, the original network is filtering secure traffic.

Why it helps: Some networks inspect HTTPS and can break the connection.

FIX 07Pause antivirus HTTPS scanning to testMEDIUM

  1. In your antivirus, find a setting such as HTTPS scanning or HTTPS protection.
  2. Turn it off, reload the site, then turn it back on right away.
  3. If that fixed it, update the antivirus or add an exception for the trusted site.

Why it helps: Chrome Help names antivirus HTTPS scanning as a known cause of secure-connection errors.

// RUN THIS SITE? FIXES FOR SITE OWNERS

FIX 08Fix the server's TLS setupADVANCEDSITE OWNERS

  1. Make sure the server supports TLS 1.2 and TLS 1.3 and modern ciphers. Chrome recommends enabling TLS 1.3 with TLS_AES_128_GCM_SHA256.
  2. Confirm the certificate is valid and covers the exact hostname visitors use.
  3. If you use Cloudflare, check the certificate status is Active in SSL/TLS > Edge Certificates and that the DNS record is Proxied. Its free Universal certificate does not cover deeper subdomains such as dev.docs.example.com.

Why it helps: Outdated protocols, weak ciphers or a missing certificate cause this error for every visitor.

Check it's fixed

  • The site loads with no warning page.
  • It loads in both normal and private windows.
  • It loads on a second device on the same network.

When to get help

If the site fails on every device and network, contact the site owner or host. On a work device, ask IT, since corporate security tools can cause this.

Questions

Is it safe to keep trying the site?

Yes, the browser has blocked the connection, so nothing was sent. Just do not install unknown certificates or software to get around it.

Why does it say the site sent an invalid response?

That wording usually comes with ERR_SSL_PROTOCOL_ERROR. The site answered in a way that did not match a valid secure handshake.

Why does it happen on my own local site?

Your local server may only support http. Open it with http:// or add a local certificate.
